Malam Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, has invited the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to an emergency meeting following the threat to embark on another round of strike.
Daily Trust reports that the emergency meeting is holding on Tuesday, April 6, at 11:00 am in the ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja.
Legit.ng gathered that this was disclosed in a statement by the ministry’s director of press and public relations, Ben. Bem Goong.
While explaining the reason for the emergency meeting, the minister said the meeting is intended to nip the strike in the bud.
The statement read:
”Education minister Adamu Adamu has invited the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to an emergency meeting following the threat to embark on another round of strike.
“The emergency meeting is to hold tomorrow, the 6th of April 2021 at 11:00 am in the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja. Explaining the reason for the emergency meeting, the Minister said the meeting is intended to nip the strike in the bud.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that following claims that the ASUU might embark on another industrial action, the union has come out to refute the claims. It was reported that Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president in an interview on Sunday, March 21, explained that the union has not issued a notice for any industrial action for now.
He said he wasn’t aware of any plan to embark on a fresh strike. He also stressed that ASUU has been in talks with the federal government concerning outstanding issues arising from the last strike. Ogunyemi’s reaction is coming almost a week after the chairman of ASUU in the University of Ibadan, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, said victimization of members and non-payment of salaries may prompt a fresh industrial action.
