On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the Flickers of Hope Foundation (FOH) hosted a remarkable celebration of academic excellence and youth empowerment at its office in Tudun Fulani, Bwari, Abuja. The occasion marked the 4th Edition of the Pa Alfred Shonubi Annual Quiz Competition, an annual initiative designed to promote academic excellence, critical thinking, and leadership among young learners.
The event commenced with the arrival and registration of participants, guests, and school representatives. In her opening address, the Executive Director of FOH, Mrs. Omolara Adedeji, warmly welcomed all attendees, provided an overview of the day’s activities, and reaffirmed the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation through quality education and values-based engagement.
A representative of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) delivered the keynote address, commending FOH for its sustained contributions to grassroots education and the significant impact the Foundation has made over the years. This was followed by a brief overview of previous editions of the competition, as well as the introduction of the participating schools and the distinguished panel of judges.
The event officially commenced with the Quiz Competition, a stimulating academic contest that tested students’ knowledge across a wide range of subjects, including Mathematics, English Studies, Basic Science, and General Knowledge/Current Affairs. Participants from eight junior secondary schools in the Bwari Area Council demonstrated exceptional preparation, confidence, and academic excellence.
The participating schools were:
- Junior Secondary School, Peyi
- Junior Secondary School, Tudun Fulani
- Junior Secondary School, Bwari I
- Junior Secondary School, Bwari Central
- Junior Secondary School, Dutse Alhaji II
- Junior Secondary School, Baupma
- Ajike Model Schools
- Daily Access Science Academy
During a short refreshment break, guests were treated to an inspiring spoken word presentation by a member of the FOH Teens Leadership Club. The performance served not only as entertainment but also as a powerful reminder of the values of integrity, resilience, and purpose that FOH seeks to instill in young people.
The programme continued with the Spoken Word Competition, where students creatively expressed themselves through compelling poetry and captivating performances. The presentations focused on the theme of economic well-being, with each participant delivering thought-provoking messages that resonated deeply with the audience.
This was followed by the Debate Competition, during which selected students engaged in stimulating discussions on contemporary issues. Demonstrating confidence, eloquence, and critical thinking, the debaters presented well-researched and persuasive arguments that reflected remarkable intellectual maturity.
Following the final collation of scores, winners from the various competitions were announced. Outstanding students and schools were recognized and rewarded with prizes, certificates, and tokens of appreciation in recognition of their exceptional performances and commitment to excellence.
The event concluded with heartfelt closing remarks, appreciation to participating schools, judges, volunteers, and guests, followed by group photographs that captured the memorable moments of the day.
The 2026 Edition of the Pa Alfred Shonubi Annual Quiz Competition was far more than an academic contest; it was a celebration of potential, purpose, excellence, and the transformative power of education.
