In a significant step towards educating and empowering our community, Flickers of Hope Foundation Community Library officially opened its doors on Saturday, 6th July 2024. Located in Tudun Fulani, Bwari Abuja, the Library aims to serve as a hub for learning, collaboration, and equipping with right knowledge.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by the representatives of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Community leaders, parents, teachers, students, community members, the News Agency of Nigeria etc. Mrs. Omolara Adedeji, Executive Director, Flickers of Hope Foundation in her keynote address, highlighted the library’s role in promoting literacy and lifelong learning. “FOH Community Library is a library for the community. It is a timely intervention to bridge the education and learning gap through access to good books. The Library stands as a beacon of knowledge, a hub of learning, and a center for connection within our community. Our library is not just a building filled with books; it is a space where people can come together to explore, discover, and grow. Through this library, we are creating a brighter future for our community.” she stated.
She also mentioned specifically, the aim of the library is to provide access to academic textbooks for students in the community and aid them excel academically, provide a safe and quiet place for reading and studying; research, do assignments etc, provide access to right knowledge through good books, revive reading culture in our community and increase Literacy in the community among other benefits.
The FOH Community Library has an impressive collection of books from various categories such as Academic books, Examination Past Questions for Examination Classes (Primary 6, Junior and Senior Secondary School)- BECE, SSCE, UTME, Inspirational Books on Business, Management, Leadership, Parenting, Marriage, Personal Development, Health etc., Novels for children and Adults, and Advanced and Tertiary level Books on various subjects including ICT, Fishery, Poetry, Electronics etc. The library will currently serve persons from age 9 to 19. One of the standout features of the new library is its spacious and quiet study area, etc.
The opening of the FOH Community Library has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from community heads and residents, all enthusiastic to start using the library.
As the FOH Community Library begins its journey, it stands as a testament to the power of community investment and the enduring value of public libraries, because most of the books in the library were donations from community members that have embraced the vision of the Library.
With its extensive resources and welcoming environment, the library is poised to become a cornerstone of the Bwari Community for years to come. This library is therefore, a dream come true for our community.
In addition to traditional books, the library will offer e-books, audiobooks, and access to various online databases in the nearest future. With a total number of 937 books currently in the library, we also look forward to more book donations and other library equipment that will further make the library conducive for users.
During the event, over 10 teen volunteer librarians were unveiled and took turns in taking persons on a tour of the library
