The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that a new curriculum for basic education will start in January 2025, with a curriculum for senior secondary education following in September 2025. Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed this at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, explaining that the curriculum includes 15 new trade subjects focused on skills like digital literacy, vocational entrepreneurship, construction, hospitality, and repair services. The curriculum aims to equip students with 21st-century skills, ensuring they acquire at least two practical skills by graduation.

Prof. Mamman noted that the failure to fully implement Nigeria’s previous 6:3:3:4 educational system justified this new approach, emphasizing a hands-on skills framework. The next three months will be dedicated to preparing teachers and finalizing curriculum details. Dr. Garba Gandu, Director of Curriculum at NERDC, highlighted that the new curriculum is competency-based and aligned with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) principles to enhance students’ global competitiveness.
