May 27 has been set aside as a holiday for children in Nigeria, it is an occasion to celebrate children. Children’s Day, therefore, emphasizes the importance of showering love and affection to each child. It is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm across the country.
For adults, it is a reminder of all the wonderful things they enjoyed doing when they were young. Children’s Day is a day that marks the joys of childhood.
This special occasion is celebrated to remind the nation of providing quality education to each child so that they can become the future building blocks of the nation and contribute towards the greater benefit of the society.”
Flickers of Hope Foundation is a non-governmental organization that support and advocate children’s education, as we strongly believe that children are the future leaders of our dear nation Nigeria. We are strong believers of instilling rich moral virtues in children and also to build their self-confidence through our various programs and activities such as our scholarships, leadership trainings and teen’s club etc. We are of the opinion that children should be molded from a young age properly so that they can become productive and responsible citizens of the country.
Children’s day also draws attention and brings to the fore awareness on problems faced by children. Children face many different problems in today’s world. No matter what the problem is, it is essential that we, as parents and adults, do everything we can to help them.
Today we will discuss some of the common problems children face in today’s society and provide advice on how you can help them overcome this challenges.
1: Pressure from Society
Children today face a lot of problems. They are under a lot of pressure to succeed in school and to meet the expectations of their parents and guardians. They are also bombarded with messages from the media that tell them they need to be perfect. As a result, children can suffer from anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
There are some things you can do to help your child deal with the problems they face:
A: Being there for them and listening to them is essential. Show them that you love them unconditionally and support them no matter what.
B: Help them develop a positive self-image by encouraging them and praising their accomplishments.
C: Teach them how to deal with stress healthily.
2: Peer Pressure
One of the most common problems that children face today is peer pressure. Peers can influence a child’s decisions and actions, often without the child realizing it. As a parent, you can help your child by teaching them how to identify and resist peer pressure.
Some signs that your child may be experiencing peer pressure include:
A: wanting to fit in with a particular group
B: feeling left out or excluded from a group
C: engaging in activities that they wouldn’t normally do
D: feeling pressured to try things that they don’t want to do
If you think your child is being influenced by their peers, talk to them about it. Let them know it’s okay to say no to friends who bring the bad side of them out. You can also encourage your child to spend time with friends who share their values and who will support their decisions and bring the good out of them.
3: Lack of Self-Confidence
One of the most common problems children face in today’s world is a lack of self-confidence. As a parent, you can help your child build self-confidence by supporting and encouraging them to pursue their interests and talents. You can also help them by teaching them how to handle criticism and failure.
Nigeria’s future depends largely on the wellbeing of its children and young people. The more a child’s wellbeing is ensured through developing appropriate support systems, like Flickers of hope foundation, the more confident Nigeria can be for its future generations.
A child who grows up in a supportive and secure environment is more likely to be able to cope well as an adult, to advance their standard of living, and to look after the older generation.
