FLICKERS OF HOPE FOUNDATION

PROGRAM CATALOG – 2024 EDITION

VISION

An empowered and transformed society

To empower through research-driven capacity building, advocacy, and networking to transform individuals and societies

 

All projects and programs are geared toward achieving this vision and mission.

 

  1. FOH TEENS LEADERSHIP CLUB

The FOH Teens Leadership Club, which started in May 2019 is a mentorship platform for children within the age of 8 to 19. Our Leadership Club is aimed to inspire our teens to build good and lasting values, work toward personal integrity and personal growth, develop confidence and self-worth so that they can embrace their own uniqueness, be known for good character, be great at self-leadership and leading others, become the best in whatever they set out to do in life and impact their society positively.  The Teens Club physical monthly meeting holds currently only in Bwari, FCT Abuja

Key Features:

  • Monthly meetings; every 1st Saturday of the month
  • Leadership Trainings, Vocational Trainings, Educational/Fun Games and Competitions, Film shows etc.
  • Distribution of value orientation handbooks
  • Personalized and group mentorship sessions
  • Networking opportunities; building valuable relationships with other teens
  • Teens Club Library; that gives club members access to borrow books. This is to encourage reading and literacy among young people.

Impact:

Over 500 pre-teens and teens have been impacted under this platform. And yearly, new teens are welcomed into the club. Currently, 97 children are registered club members for this year

  1. COMMUNITY TEENS CLUB

The FOH Community Teens club, which was started in July 2023, is an extension of the FOH Teens Leadership Club and is committed to reaching and impacting preteens and teens in inner rural communities, with the aid of volunteers in the communities who coordinate meetings and programs.

  • Networking opportunities, building valuable relationships with other teens
  • Teens Club Library; that gives club members access to borrow books. This is to encourage reading and literacy among young people.

Impact:

The Community Teens Club operates currently in 3 communities; Kuzhako, Guita and Gyeyidna in Bwari FCT Abuja

 

  1. PROJECT BACK2SCHOOL

Project Back2School at Flickers of Hope Foundation was launched in 2018, with the objective of taking indigent children off the streets and sending them back to school. FOH does this by identifying deserving children in this category who demonstrated exceptional academic merit and are willing pursue their educational dreams but are financially limited, in Bwari community and have completed their basic school. They are enrolled them, and sponsor them through the three years of study in Junior Secondary School.

We also ensure that the children’s development is holistic by not only seeing to their academic progress and general wellbeing but also conducting monthly life development and leadership trainings, to see that the children are groomed and mentored rightly unto a balanced adulthood.

  • Merit-based selection process; scholarship exams
  • Academic support enrolment and termly fees, school uniforms, textbooks, notebooks for maximum concentration in school
  • Monthly leadership trainings, and meetings with beneficiaries
  • Skill acquisition trainings
  • Personalized and group mentorship sessions
  • Guidance and counseling support
  • Other additional welfare support; based on individual needs
  • Reports and proper documentation of scholarship beneficiaries

 

Impact:

43 children have benefitted while 12 children are currently enrolled in school this year.

 

  1. FOH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

FOH Scholarship Fund is a project under the Back2School project, with the aim of taking more children off the streets and back to school. This involves the creation of a personalized scholarship fund by individuals where the fund is named after them or their loved ones.

Key Features:

  • Transparent use of funds for child’s benefit.
  • Quarterly reports and updates to sponsors
  • Scholarships
  • Merit-based selection process; scholarship exams
  • Academic support enrolment and termly fees, school uniforms, textbooks, notebooks for maximum concentration in school
  • Monthly leadership trainings, and meetings with beneficiaries
  • Skill acquisition trainings
  • Personalized and group mentorship sessions
  • Guidance and counseling support
  • Other additional welfare support; based on individual needs
  • Reports and proper documentation of scholarship beneficiaries

Impact:

  • 2 scholarship funds opened under the organization; supporting widows children and girl children respectively
  • 8 children have benefitted while 6 children are currently enrolled in school this year.

 

  1. INFORMAL SCHOOL

FOH Informal School is a tutorial-based program for adults and teens alike, targeted at those who cannot read and write or have been out of school for a while. It offers refresher courses to those that probably want to return back to school or seek better employment.

The informal school for the year 2024 is focused on young school levers (primary 6 pupils) who are unable to resume JSS 1 due to financial constraints; to keep their minds fresh by taking them through basic academic work while they await enrollment into school

Key Features:

  • Free Tutorial Services to adults and children (young school levers)
  • Primary focus: basic maths, English language, reading, spelling, writing etc
  • Other welfare and counseling support

Impact:

  • 5 adults and 6 children have been through the informal school

 

TEENS COMMUNITY LIBRARY

FOH Teens Community library is a platform that serves to revive reading culture among students, providing a quiet and safe environment to read and do assignments, and gives students access to relevant books.

Key Features:

  • Quiet reading space for students
  • Access to academic books and other educational materials
  • Accessible by primary 6 and secondary school students

 

ANNUAL EVENTS

  1. ANNUAL PARENT SEMINAR

The FOH Annual Parent Seminar is a gathering for Parents to share and discuss on how to become better parents to their children. It is a platform aimed at helping parents become more deliberate caregivers. It’s an open discussion session where crucial matters concerning parenting are being discussed. Physical meeting hold in Bwari FCT Abuja only. The 1st edition held in May 2023.

Key Initiatives:

  • Parent gathering only
  • Open discussions on parenting issues

 

Impact:

22 parents were present and benefitted from the 1st edition of the program in 2023; and 34 parents in the 2024 seminar

 

  1. 6. ANNUAL QUIZ COMPETITION

The FOH Annual Quiz Competition is an event aimed at engaging secondary school students in a healthy academic competition. The goal of this event is to further build the value of education and encourage excellence among students in our community, while opening up the students to team work and collaboration. 1st Annual Quiz competition was held in July, 2023, in Bwari Area Council, Abuja.

 

Key Initiatives:

  • Competition covers basic subjects like mathematic, English language, General studies etc.
  • Tests in other academic areas; reading, debate etc.
  • Prizes and Certificates

Impact:

5 Junior Secondary Schools participated in the competition in 2023, and over 83 persons were present at the 2023 event.

 

  1. ANNUAL BOOT CAMP

FOH Annual BOOT Camp is an offshoot of our Teens Leadership Club was started in 2019. It is a two weeks period of impacting our teens the more. It’s an event that hosts our preteens and teens for a two week period within the hours of 9am to 2pm, weekdays.

 

Key Initiatives:

  • Fun and Learning
  • Two weeks boot camp; Mondays to Fridays
  • Leadership Trainings, Vocational Trainings, Educational/Fun Games and Competitions, Book clubs, Drama, Film shows, Community service etc.
  • Distribution of value orientation handbooks
  • Networking opportunities; building valuable relationships with other teens

 

Impact:

Over 200 pre-teens and teens have been present and impacted at our Boot Camp. 2024 will mark the 5th edition of this boot camp.
